Bonfire Night in Elsdon
There’s something that feels very ancient about gathering round a huge bonfire on our village green. Dark shapes made anonymous by the dazzling brightness; children hurtling around; the huge crashes of the fireworks and in the background the noises of startled animals in the hills around. Light spilling out from windows and doorways as their inhabitants venture into the freezing night for the spectacle. It’s a curious evening; not particularly social – we gather in small knots to stare up at the sky. A car horn sounds the beginning and end of the display and we go our separate ways for another year.
